Goal
Know every note on the guitar neck, and use octave shapes to find any note on any string quickly.
How to practise
- Complete level 1 first.
- Octave shapes: from the 6th or 5th string, the octave is two strings up and two frets higher. From the 4th or 3rd string, two strings up and three frets higher (because of the B string tuning).
- The high E string has the same notes as the low E string.
- Do one string per day for Part A, then Parts B and C on later days.
Self-check
Check with the key. Use a timer for Part B: aim to find all positions of a note in under ten seconds.
Next steps
Use the fretboard trainer with all strings, print the guitar fretboard notes chart and a blank fretboard to test yourself, and apply the knowledge to the CAGED system.
