Answer key
Show the answers
- Key of E flat Major / Key of C Minor
- Key of G Major / Key of E Minor
- Key of C Major / Key of A Minor
- Key of B flat Major / Key of G Minor
- Key of D Major / Key of B Minor
- Key of F Major / Key of D Minor
- Key of A Major / Key of F sharp Minor
Goal
Identify all major key signatures instantly and write them correctly, a basic skill for reading music and understanding keys.
How to practise
- Sharp keys: the last sharp is the 7th degree; the key is one semitone above it. Last sharp C# → D major.
- Flat keys: the second-to-last flat is the key name. Flats Bb, Eb, Ab → Eb major. One flat is F major (memorise it).
- Order of sharps: F C G D A E B. Order of flats: B E A D G C F (the reverse).
- Do Part A in one session and Part B in another. Writing is harder than reading, so give it time.
Self-check
Compare with the answer key, including the position of each sharp or flat on the staff. Order and position must match standard notation exactly.
Next steps
Read key signatures and the circle of fifths. Print the key signatures chart and continue with key signatures level 2, which adds minor keys.
