Goal

Handle every interval type, including the spellings that matter in harmony: augmented and diminished intervals, compound intervals and enharmonic pairs.

How to practise

  • Augmented = one semitone larger than major or perfect. Diminished = one semitone smaller than minor or perfect.
  • The letter distance decides the number, always. C–F# is an augmented 4th; C–Gb is a diminished 5th. Same sound, different spelling.
  • Compound intervals: subtract 7 to find the simple interval. A 10th is an octave plus a 3rd.
  • When writing intervals, first write the correct letter, then add the accidental to reach the right number of semitones.

Self-check

Check with the answer key and look carefully at the spelling, not only the sound. An answer that sounds right but uses the wrong letter is wrong in theory terms.
