Goal
Spell and recognise the five main seventh chords, the vocabulary of jazz, soul, funk and much pop harmony.
How to practise
| Chord | Formula | On C |
|---|---|---|
| maj7 | 1 3 5 7 | C E G B |
| 7 (dominant) | 1 3 5 b7 | C E G Bb |
| m7 | 1 b3 5 b7 | C Eb G Bb |
| m7b5 | 1 b3 b5 b7 | C Eb Gb Bb |
| dim7 | 1 b3 b5 bb7 | C Eb Gb Bbb |
- Build the triad first, then add the seventh.
- For Part C, the pattern in every major key is Imaj7, ii7, iii7, IVmaj7, V7, vi7, viiø7.
- Work on one part per session.
Self-check
Check with the answer key, then listen to each chord in the chord builder. Training the sound with the ear trainer in chord mode helps you hear the difference between maj7, 7 and m7.
Next steps
Read the seventh chords lesson and diatonic harmony. Hear seventh chords in context with the ii7–V7–Imaj7 progression in the progression player, and print the chord formulas chart.
