Goal
Spell every major scale correctly from the step pattern, without relying on memory alone.
How to practise
- Write the seven letters from the tonic first: D E F G A B C D.
- Then apply the pattern W W H W W W H and add accidentals: D E F# G A B C# D.
- Each letter appears exactly once. A scale never has both F and F#, or a sharp and a flat mixed.
- Check that the number of sharps or flats matches the key signature of that key.
- Do four or five scales per session.
Self-check
Compare with the key and play each scale on an instrument or in the scale explorer. A wrong note sticks out immediately when you hear the scale.
D – E – F♯ – G – A – B – C♯
