Goal
Know the natural notes on the E and A strings of the bass. Almost every bass line starts with finding the root on these strings.
How to practise
- Natural notes are two frets apart, except E–F and B–C, which are one fret apart.
- E string: E (0), F (1), G (3), A (5), B (7), C (8), D (10), E (12).
- A string: A (0), B (2), C (3), D (5), E (7), F (8), G (10), A (12).
- Fill in the diagram slowly, then repeat on a clean copy without help.
- Play each note and say its name, moving up and then down.
Self-check
Compare with the key. Then test yourself: pick a random note and find it on both strings in under two seconds.
