Goal
Read low and high notes in the bass clef reliably, including the low E1 of the bass guitar and middle C above the staff.
How to practise
- Make sure level 1 is easy before starting.
- Learn ledger-line landmarks: below the staff, E2 sits on the first ledger line, C2 on the second, A1 on the third, and E1 hangs just below the fourth. Above the staff, middle C4 sits on the first ledger line.
- Read from the nearest landmark by steps instead of counting from the staff each time.
- Do one row at a time, check, then continue. Repeat the sheet on another day.
Self-check
Compare with the answer key. Write down the notes you missed and practise them in the note reading trainer with a wider range.
Next steps
Print the bass fretboard notes chart to connect reading with the neck. Then continue with bass clef level 3.
