Bass Clef Note Reading – Level 1

Name ________________   Date __________   Score ____ / 32

Write the letter name under each note. All notes are on the five lines or four spaces of the bass clef staff, from G2 to A3, with no ledger lines or accidentals. Try to recognise each note directly instead of counting, then check with the answer key.

Goal

Name every note on the bass clef staff quickly. This is essential for piano left hand, bass guitar, cello, trombone and anyone reading low parts.

How to practise

  • Learn the lines G B D F A and the spaces A C E G as two groups.
  • Find F3 first: it is the line between the two dots of the bass clef. Read the other notes from there.
  • Fill in the sheet slowly and accurately once, then repeat it on a later day with a timer.
  • Say each note aloud and play it on your instrument if you can.

Self-check

Check your answers with the key and circle mistakes. If you often answer a note that is two letters too high, you are reading it as treble clef: practise the bass clef separately until it feels independent.

Next steps

Read the staff and clefs and drill with the note reading trainer in bass clef mode. Continue with bass clef level 2, and see bass basics if you play bass.
