Major Scale on Bass
Learn the one-octave major scale shape from a root on the E string, then the shape from the A string and the two-octave version. Play each ascending and descending, then the sequences in thirds and groups of four. Use one finger per fret where possible and a metronome.
C major scale, one octave
G major scale from the E string
Goal
Know the major scale on the bass in movable shapes, as the basis for bass lines, fills and understanding which notes belong to a key.
How to practise
- Learn the shape and say the degrees while you play.
- Metronome at 60 BPM, quarter notes, then eighths. Increase by 5 BPM after clean repetitions.
- Move the shape to other keys: A, C, D, F.
- Play in thirds (1-3, 2-4, 3-5...) to hear harmony inside the scale.
- Use alternating plucking fingers throughout.
Self-check
Can you play the scale starting from any degree? Can you find the root quickly in another octave? Check with the scale explorer in bass mode.
Next steps
Read the major scale and bass basics, then continue with bass arpeggios. Draw the shapes from memory on a blank bass fretboard.
